Background of the Study :

Urbanization is a transformative process that reshapes economic and social structures. In Nigeria, rapid urban growth—especially in megacities like Lagos—has profound economic implications. Between 2000 and 2020, urbanization has driven the expansion of infrastructure, increased job opportunities, and attracted investments, while also straining public services and widening socio-economic disparities (Oluwaseun, 2023). The influx of people into urban centers has spurred demand for housing, transportation, and utilities, thereby stimulating economic activity. However, the challenges of congestion, pollution, and inadequate urban planning often offset these benefits. This study assesses the economic implications of urbanization by examining growth indicators, investment patterns, and infrastructure development in Lagos. It also explores the social costs associated with rapid urbanization, such as income inequality and environmental degradation. Through quantitative data analysis and qualitative insights from urban planners and local government officials, the research aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of how urbanization impacts economic performance and to identify strategies to promote more sustainable urban development (Adeniyi, 2024; Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Despite its potential to drive economic growth, rapid urbanization in Lagos has led to significant challenges including congestion, environmental degradation, and unequal access to services (Oluwaseun, 2023). The gap between urban growth and adequate infrastructure provision has resulted in socio-economic disparities. This study seeks to investigate the economic implications of urbanization and to identify the critical factors that hinder sustainable urban development.

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess the economic benefits of urbanization in Lagos.

2. To identify challenges arising from rapid urban growth.

3. To propose strategies for sustainable urban development.

Research Questions:

1. What are the economic impacts of urbanization in Lagos?

2. What challenges limit sustainable urban development?

3. What policies can address urbanization’s negative effects?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Urbanization positively contributes to economic growth.

2. Infrastructure deficits exacerbate urban challenges.

3. Targeted urban policies improve sustainable development.

Significance of the Study (100 words):

This study is significant as it evaluates the economic implications of urbanization in Lagos, offering insights to urban planners and policymakers for creating more sustainable cities. The findings will contribute to improved urban management and more equitable growth (Oluwaseun, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

The study focuses on Lagos megacity from 2000 to 2020, emphasizing economic and infrastructural impacts. It does not address rural-urban migration dynamics in detail.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Urbanization: The increasing concentration of populations into cities.

2. Megacity: A very large city, typically with a population over 10 million.

3. Sustainable Urban Development: Urban growth that meets present needs without compromising future resources.
